Hi Fellow Readers!
This is a post I’ve been wanting to write for far too long, now. Many things happened during the last few months. Some dragged me away from photography related topics. Still, I have a small announcement I’d like to make.
Choosing to write in English only
I know my blog isn’t updated frequently, and one reason behind it is that I couldn’t decide whether to write in Polish or English or both? How often and how long? And on what topics? It was quite hard for me to make these decisions. On top of that comes my hesitance to write anything at all. I’m not as good with words as I am with cameras, so this stops me a little as well.
After giving some thought to that matter, looking at the pros and cons, I decided to go with only one option – English. And here are a few reasons for it, which I’ll go into detail below.
Business reasons
This is the most important thing to get straight from the beginning. I wondered who my readers might be and how to engage with them. I found out that while writing in Polish would be much easier for me, it also would be limiting for all others. When I think about my photography as a business to run (which I hopefully will do sooner or later), I definitely have international clientele in mind.
What excites me the most is visiting all these amazing places all around the globe and capturing the unique moments I’ve seen there. For me, traveling is an indispensable part of it. I want my photography to be a part, and one of the main drivers for my future trips and adventures (in your face, Covid-19). This made me realize that I have to look much further than the country I live in (whichever this might be at the moment) and put English at the top of the list.
Time investment
The second part of my dilemma was: “how much time to invest in writing”? I could go for a double-languaged version of a blog, essentially duplicating the work I’ve already done. Other option would be to choose which posts to publish in Polish, and which in English. I think that approach could create confusion among my readers. Some portions of the blog would be available only to a relatively small number of followers, and that’s not what I intend to do. The content which I create should be accessible to everyone or at least most of you.
Focusing on what’s important
I’m aware that blogging is slowly dying. Yet, there are people, who choose reading over watching and listening. And writing is a much simpler way to share thoughts than producing a video or a podcast. That’s why I choose to do it this way – to have more time to focus on photography itself.
Despite an almost year-long break in traveling, I intend to get back to shooting. It became important to me and changed my ways of doing it already. I choose different times of the day to hike, different routes than the most obvious ones, and, finally, I often revisit places I’ve already seen. I remembering sleeping during the day and living for a month in a small car, only to capture some unique photographs along the way. This is a whole new way of traveling for me, which still makes me uneasy sometimes.
Thanks for sticking around for this whole post – take care, see you soon!
